Illinois has already passed a medical marijuana bill. But red tape among other things has really kept the ball from rolling. The Governor of Illinois, Bruce Rauner recently announced the winners of licenses to distribute and cultivate so things may pick up pace.
2 other marijuana bills have been filed in the state of Illinois since then however. One would decriminalize the possession of up to 30 grams of marijuana and restrict the punishment to a small fine with no possibility of arrest or imprisonment. The other marijuana bill would outright legalize possession of small amounts of cannabis up to 30 grams and allow for personal cultivation of up to 5 plants. Good Luck Illinois!
It is about time for the entire nation and not just a state here and there to legalize cannabis. Draconian laws based on ignorance of many and the greed of some have countless lives being wasted away in prison for marijuana related charges. Any progress away from the current drug war mentality and toward legalization is good progress though. It is only a matter of time before the rest of the country wakes up and changes the laws to reflect that.
